The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson || BOOK REVIEW

A princess must find her place in a reborn world.

She flees on her wedding day.

She steals ancient documents from the Chancellor's secret collection.

She is pursued by bounty hunters sent by her own father.

She is Princess Lia, seventeen, First Daughter of the House of Morrighan.

The Kingdom of Morrighan is steeped in tradition and the stories of a bygone world, but some traditions Lia can't abide. Like having to marry someone she's never met to secure a political alliance.

Fed up and ready for a new life, Lia flees to a distant village on the morning of her wedding. She settles in among the common folk, intrigued when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deceptions swirl and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—secrets that may unravel her world—even as she feels herself falling in love.

Hmmm. What to say about this book. Well, I wanted to like it more than I did- since many people were saying they loved it. I think part of the problem I had with this book was that it was so hyped up in my mind that when it didn't live up to my expectations I got a bit disappointed. Also, a large chunk of the 'mystery' in this book was that the reader didn't know who the assassin or the prince was as the POV changes frequently- but it is never said exactly who is who. Besides Lia, we get to read from four other POV's. The assassin, the prince, Kaden, and Rafe. Kaden and Rafe are both either the prince or the assassin, but the reader just doesn't know. However, for me, I figured it out pretty early on who was who, and so when the 'big reveal' happened- I just wasn't very surprised.
I also found the first 2/3 of the book hard to get through, as not much was really happening. Honestly, if the last 1/3 of the book didn't exist, I probably wouldn't have liked this book much at all. Now, the last 1/3 of the book was AMAZING.

It was fast-paced, interesting, and just plain awesome. I think Mary E. Pearson should have turned the last 1/3 into the last 1/2 and explained the last part of the book a bit more. The book summary the author gives us is basically what the first part of the book is anyway- just an elongated version of it.
I did like this book enough though to go out and get the second in the series, 'The Heart of Betrayal' and am currently reading it. We'll see if it get's better I suppose.
Ratings
4/5 stars
Did I like the ending?
Yes, but there was a pretty big cliffhanger. So be careful!
Would I read again?
I don't know. Maybe if the mood strikes me. I don't think this book would be an easy re-read.
Would I recommend?
If you're looking for a solid YA, then this book is for you.

Ciao for now,
Jasmine
